How does your Garden Grow?

We created our own mini gardens and have planted grass seeds. We have been watching our mini gardens closely to spot signs of growth, we think we will have lawns in no time!

Athletics Tournament

We joined several Year 2 classes from across the Colne Valley to take part in an athletics tournament at Colne Valley High School. Everyone cheered on the participants and had fun taking part in the races and activities. We did extremely well... we came second!

Spring 2 Outdoor Learning Day!

Our Year 2 children enjoyed a fabulous day of outdoor learning! They measured and compared rainfall using the gauges they had made earlier in the term. Working together they weeded and prepared planters ready for spring plants to brighten up our outdoor area. Now we can watch the plants grow and change over the coming seasons. Year 2 also explored the surrounding area, identifying insects and the wildlife around us.  A brilliant day of teamwork, discovery, and hands-on learning.

World Book Day

Year 2 had a fantastic day celebrating World Book Day! We loved dressing up as our favourite characters or into our cosy pyjamas, sharing stories we adore and taking part in a lively team quiz. It was a day filled with fun, inspired by our love of reading.

March Measuring

Year 2 have been practicing measuring this week! We are learning the difference between centimeters and meters and have been busy using meter sticks, rulers and trundle wheels to measure things around school.

Northern Gas Visit

Year 2 had a visit from Northern Gas, where we learned all about "net zero" and how small changes can help protect our planet. The children used special balance scales to explore different energy choices and worked together to find ways to be kinder to the Earth. They loved discovering how simple actions can make a big difference!

Rain Gauges

We have been learning about rainfall during our science lessons and decided to measure the rainfall at Linthwaite Ardron. We collected plastic bottles and set to work creating our own, following instructions carefully. Now we wait to see how much rain we will get (hopefully not too much!)

Year 2 Park Visit

Year 2 walked to the local park today to support our English learning. We had a lovely time exploring the space and gathering ideas for our new story. However, we were disappointed to notice that the park was not as neat and tidy as we had hoped.

It made us wonder...

Does the character in our new story have a similar problem?

We are excited to find out and use today's experience to inspire our writing!

Year 2 Maths Workshop

This morning, Year 2 enjoyed a fantastic Maths Workshop where our parents joined us in class. Together, we explored number bonds, grouping activities, and shape-sorting challenges. It was wonderful to see everyone working collaboratively, having fun, and building confidence with their maths skills. Thank you to all the families who came to support our learning!

Parade

Year 2 enjoyed a vibrant African-inspired parade. The children proudly displayed their beautifully crafted bead necklaces and played their djembe drums with great enthusiasm. It was a joyful celebration of our learning and a wonderful opportunity to share our creativity with the school community.

Playtime in the MUGA

How exciting! Year 2 got to try out our brand-new MUGA (Multi-Use Games Area) at playtime. We tested our scooting and cricket skills, while Miss Warren practised ducking out of the way of the occasional stray ball!

African Arts & Crafts

Year 2 have worked hard to complete their clay huts and have produced some African-style weaving- a wonderful blend of creativity, culture and craftsmanship!

Outdoor Learning Day- Spring 1

We had a fantastic Outdoor Learning Day filled with creativity, exploration, and hands-on learning!

Children took part in a range of activities linked to our Africa topic and our maths focus for the term.

Here is what we got up to:

Active Maths: We practiced our 10 times tables through energetic outdoor games and movement challenges.

Safari Adventure: After creating the Big Five African animals, we headed into the woodland for a safari to spot them in their natural 'habitats'.

African-Inspired Necklaces: Using rolled paper 'beads', pupils designed and created colourful necklaces inspired by traditional African beadwork.

Djembe Making: Everyone worked creatively to make their own mini djembe drums, decorating them with patterns and colours.

African Vegan Stew: We finished the day by making and tasting a warm, delicious African vegan stew.

It was an exciting day full of teamwork, creativity, and outdoor adventure!

Out Of Africa

In Art & Design lessons children are sculpting with clay to create their own versions of Maasai mud huts. Using clay to shape, roll, pinch, pull and join materials and exploring techniques such as making impressions and experimenting with pattern and texture. They are currently 'works in progress' but I think you will agree they are shaping up beautifully...we have some talented sculptors in Year 2!

Gymnastics

In PE we are developing our gymnastic skills, we are working on balancing and making gymnastic shapes with our bodies. For more of a challenge we have worked in small groups to incorporate a shape into a routine. We then performed our routine and other children had to spot which gymnastic shapes we had used.

Active Reading

We were delighted to welcome Claire Bolton from CVHS back for another active reading session. The children engaged brilliantly, using movement, voice and imagination to explore the story in a lively, memorable way.

Street Feet

Year 2 listened carefully as they learnt essential road safety skills with support from the fantastic Street Feet team. The children enjoyed practising how to stay safe and make sensible choices near roads.

New Year Goal Setting

Year 2 have kicked off the new term with positivity and purpose as they explored the theme of goal setting. The children have been thinking carefully about the year ahead- what they want to improve and what they hope to achieve, and how they can become the very best versions of themselves.

In Design & Technology, the class created their own picture frames, learning new skills and taking pride in their craftmanship. Inside each frame, they placed a picture of themselves achieving their personal goals- a wonderful reminder of their ambitions and a celebration of their creativity!

We are incredibly proud of the thoughtful ideas the children have shared and the enthusiasm they have brought to this project. We have created a display as a daily inspiration to keep striving, improving and believing in ourselves.

Back to School

In Year 2 we are excited to be back together again following the Christmas break. We have been busy creating a shared 'Christmas Memories' board, writing about our favourite memories of Christmas and creating illustrations to accompany them. It was a great way to get us back into the swing of writing, whilst sharing our exciting news!

Nativity 2025: The Bethlehem Bake Off

This year's Nativity brought a delightful twist to the traditional story as our children performed The Bethlehem Bake Off- a heart-warming celebration of teamwork, talent and Christmas cheer.

Our Year 2 children shone in the lead roles, delivering confident performances filled with humour, character, and charm. From star bakers to bustling crew members, every child brought the story to life with enthusiasm and pride.

The production was filled with catchy songs, lively storytelling, and plenty of festive fun. We are incredibly proud of all our pupils for their dedication and hard work, and we 're delighted to share the joy of this special performance with our school community.

Materials Investigation

As part of our Science learning in Year 2 we have been investigating materials and their different properties. Children learnt that different materials need to have different properties depending on their purpose- this got us thinking about umbrellas and what is needed when choosing a material for one!

We learnt the vocabulary- absorbent and waterproof. Then made predictions and then conducted an experiment to test which materials were waterproof.

-No children were soaked during this experiment! :)

Lucy Pittaway

Year 2 have been exploring the artwork of Lucy Pittaway. Using chalk pastels, we created our own bright, countryside-inspired pieces, thinking carefully about size, placement, and layering to give our artwork a sense of depth.

Bee Diverse

We had a visit from the Equans team and we had fun taking part in a bee themed workshop. We learnt about the importance of bees to our ecosystem and how to encourage bees into our green spaces. We made seed bombs to help build bee numbers in our local area.

Pilgrimage 2025

'God's Gift of Water' was the theme for our pilgrimage this year. We enjoyed a retelling of Noah's Ark by Mrs Taylor along the route and searched for animals to pair up for the ark journey along the way.

Autumn Outdoor Learning Day

We headed outdoors and continued our class read of 'The Jolly Postman'. We read the postcard from Jack to the giant and worked in teams to create our own giant postcards from the giant in reply.

For Math we continued to work on our skills when counting in 10's and 1's. We collected sticks to use as tens and used conkers to use as ones and placed them on a place value grid.

We created amphibian habitats in the woodland, remembering what conditions amphibians like and what their needs for survival are.

Welcome to Year Two!
