World Book Day

Well, we don't know what the collective noun word for a group of Oompa Loompas (an oodle perhaps?) but there were lots of them, plus a golden ticket and Mr Wonka himself, in Year Five on World Book Day! Have a look at our amazing class on this always-popular day in school.

Oakwell Hall

We had an awesome day today at Oakwell Hall. We travelled back in time to Tudor England and experienced quill writing and Tudor games, sketching and took part in the History Mystery Handling activity. We also learned about Tudor Herbs and Spices in the Kitchen, had a tour of the hall and finished the day with a ghost story on the coach back. It was fantastic!

Prayers for Mothering Sunday

We wrote some prayers for Mothering Sunday, to be read out at Christ Church, Linthwaite, as part of their Sunday church service. We then sent them home for the important ladies in our life. Have a read of Poppy, and Jordan's prayers.

Monarchs Since 1066 Class Assembly

Year Five impressed parents, carers and friends with a lively assembly about their history learning. Songs, dances, fights, biographies, class Magna Cartas and a very jolly executioner brought 100 years of British history to life in their assembly. Have a look at their performance below.

Magic Flute Opera - Huddersfield Town Hall

We had a fantastic time visiting Huddersfield Town Hall to join singers from the Royal Opera house in performing the Magic Flute. The children had enjoyed learning the songs and the story of the Opera in lessons in advance and were impressed with the orchestra and beautiful surroundings of the Town Hall. One of the children was even interviewed for an ITV News segment about the event!

Royal Armouries Trip

We had an exciting trip to the Royal Armouries, learning about military hardware and how it was used in many historical periods. The children took part in workshops learning about soldiery in the Second World War and how different equipment was used in different ways. We also watched a performance by a Viking Shield Maiden and explored the many galleries. We had a blast!

Starry Starry Night

Our Autumn 2 topic was 'Earth and Space' and it encompasses so much more than just learning about the science of the Solar System. We listened to a wide selection of songs and music based on the sky, stars and heavens above, including Holst, David Bowie and our favourite, Starry Starry Night' by Don McLean. This lead us to looking at Van Gogh's night-time paintings and his 'Starry Night' in particular. We created a large-scale collaborative piece using sand, glue, tissue paper and acrylic paint as well as our own individual versions replicating Van Gogh's style and brush strokes. We are proud of our finished pieces!

Winter Artwork

After looking at the art of Kandinsky and Klimt, Year Five created these super mixed-media artworks to go with their poems written in English on the theme of winter. First they divided their pages up into squares, using water colour paint to colour each square a different 'sky' colour. They added a black tree silhouette and then added cut out squares of metallic paper. White and silver posca pens were used to add swirls of snow to their artwork. Aren't they chilly but beautiful!

Year 5 and Year 2 Games Expo

We have been making maze games on purple mash this half term. Today we shared them with the children in Year 2 to see if they could understand our instructions and challenges. We got lots of thumbs up form the younger children at the end of the session.

Year 5 Outdoor Learning

Check out some pictures from our awesome Autumn Outdoor Learning Day. The children learnt about similes and metaphors, data collection and played team games in the grounds around school. We had a great time!

Ian's Farm Visit

Today we had an exciting visit from Ian's Farm. Ian brought all sorts of animals for us to look at and stroke - donkeys, alpacas, sheep, goats, tortoises, chickens, ducks, guinea pigs, rabbits and dogs! Everyone had a great time and learnt a lot of amazing animal facts.

Recommended Reading Books for Year Five Pupils

We are often asked what books to recommend that might suit a Year Five pupil. Click on the link below to take you to a site with bags of ideas for suitable reading material. Obviously, you know your child best; their level of reading ability and what subject matter might be best suited (or avoided) for their own individual needs and beliefs, but this site enables you to click on the book, gain further information about it and will even take you directly to an on-line shop. Please note; we are not affiliated to the site in any way and the books shown are meant as serve as ideas for your children only.

Tudor textiles - DT

As part of our Spring DT unit, we looked at the art of Tudor artist Hans Holbein and decided to create a life-size embroidered tapestry of King Henry the 8th. We have used lots of different sewing techniques. It may take us some time to complete, but we know he will look incredible.
